After studying sociology and statistics at the University of Freiburg, he obtained his doctorate (Dr. rer. med.) in evidence-based medicine at the University of Leipzig. He subsequently pursued postdoctoral studies in epidemiology at the University of Marburg and was appointed professor at Marburg University Hospital. For over 20 years he has been active in epidemiological research, especially using real-world data. He is the author or co-author of more than 600 publications in medical journals. His core research specialisation is the epidemiology of chronic diseases.
