Food Supplement or Herbal Medicinal Product?

There are increasing challenges for manufacturers and distributors of herbal medicinal products and substance-based medical devices.

What distinguishes food supplements from medicinal products?

The main difference between food supplements and medicinal products lies in their function and regulatory categorisation. Food supplements are intended to supplement the general diet and provide certain nutrients without treating or preventing specific diseases. Pharmaceuticals, on the other hand, are intended to treat or prevent diseases or alter physiological functions and are therefore subject to stricter regulations. Correct classification is crucial to avoid legal consequences and ensure consumer safety.

For this reason, we included this highly topical subject in the ALPHATOPICS GmbH training programme last year with a new intensive training course (2.5 days in attendance) "Food supplements in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Europe".
