Phytoanalysis: Ensuring Reliable and Robust Quality Assessment
Herbal medicinal products pose specific challenges for analytical characterisation and quality assurance. Unlike chemically defined medicinal products, phytopharmaceuticals are based on complex multi-component mixtures. Their composition can be influenced by origin, cultivation, processing and storage. Reliable quality assessment therefore requires a sound understanding of plant constituents as well as appropriate analytical procedures and regulatory requirements.
Reliable quality assessment requires consideration of different analytical approaches and questions. The selection of suitable marker substances and reference standards, chromatographic methods and fingerprint analysis, analytical procedure development and validation, as well as stability testing, need to interact effectively. In addition, specific requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia, contaminant analysis and microbiological quality control must be taken into account.
It is precisely these interrelationships that make modern phytoanalysis a demanding task for development and quality control. Analytical decisions must be scientifically sound, regulatory compliant and robust in practical application. At the same time, requirements continue to evolve: modern concepts for analytical procedure development, validation and continuous performance monitoring are placing greater emphasis on risk-based and lifecycle-oriented approaches.
The 11-part webinar series “Current Topics in Phytoanalysis” systematically addresses these key questions. It covers the specific characteristics of complex plant-based mixtures, marker substances, reference standards, TLC, HPTLC and fingerprint analysis, as well as analytical procedure development, validation and stability testing. Further key topics include the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia, contaminant analysis and the microbiological testing of herbal raw materials, preparations and medicinal products.
The series thus provides a consolidated understanding of key analytical and regulatory issues and supports specialists and managers in confidently assessing complex questions and making well-founded analytical decisions. The modules build on one another from a technical perspective, while each module is also self-contained and can therefore be booked individually.
